Island’s Sunrise Art Crew
This project is dedicated to all the participants of the Sunflower Student Movement; also to the previous generations who, despite their frustration and exhaustion, never gave up fighting for a better society. This is to Taiwan. We hope for a peaceful, stable country with less disparity between the rich and the poor and less monopolization by big corporations. We shall fight for freedom and for an authentic democracy. This project is dedicated to all those determined souls. Let us protect this island until the sun appears before the horizon.

Origin of “Island’s Sunrise”

The “Sunflower Student Movement” is a non-violent protest against the “Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement”, a free trade agreement between Taiwan and China. In protest against the black-box decision-making process on behalf of the Taiwanese government, student participants occupied the legislative yuan on March 18, 2014. Several days later, a groups of students from the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) decided to organize a team and spread the movement in the most direct and powerful way.

On March 23, the TNUA group invited the Taiwanese indi band “Fire Ex”to write a song for the movement that would lift the spirits of participants by way of “gentle power”. In just 48 hours, the lead singer Da-chung Yang wrote, composed and recorded “Island’s Sunrise”. On March 27, the TNUA group created an event on Facebook called “Island’s Sunrise Sing Along”, encouraging participants of the sit-in outside the legislative yuan to learn this song, bring their instruments to the site and summon even more friends to sing along. At the same night, a recording of “Island’s Sunrise” was made inside the Legislative Yuan with Yang and other student occupiers.

With the assistance of other student organizations occupying the legislative yuan, the group created different music videos for the song, including “Island’s Sunrise, Documented” which presents footage of the actual movement, and “Island’s Sunrise, Animated”, which features animations created by students from the Department of Animation in TNUA and emphasizes the gentle, non-violent aspect of the movement,

In order to promote the upcoming parade against the service free trade on March 30, the group debuted “Island’s Sunrise, Documented” on youtube the night before the parade. They also invited sympathizers around the world to create their own versions of the song. On the night of the protest, “Island’s Sunrise, Animated” was debuted on the internet, while Fire Ex performed live.

Since then, “Island’s Sunrise” became more then just a song; it connected the original TNUA art students and other professional talents that sympathized with the movement, thus resulting in a new collective: “Island’s Sunrise” Art Crew.
