Interview The Capelin
1-Could you present the band to Kochipan's readers ?
Hello, we ‘re The Capelin(柳葉魚) from Taiwan. We’re a three-man-band consisting of Simpson Chien(Guitar/Vocal), Stephanie Li(Drum), and Karu Lin(Bass).
2-What was your musical way before the Capelin ?
For me, I had learned piano for about ten years from I was six. Until fist grade in senior high, I joined the rock club and started learning guitar. Soon had my first band and became the leader of rock club. When I was a freshman in college, I mat Stephanie, and we consisted The Capelin in 2005. Stephanie also started playing drum and joined the rock club in high school. The Capelin is her first band. Karu joined us at the second year after we consist the band. She loved bass in senior high, and startd playing in collage. The Caplin is a also her fist band.
3-You quote Brit Pop as one of your main influence. In which way it has been a musical vector for you and finally what is the musical style of The Capelin ?
In the begining, we were just like a normal rock 4-peices rock band. We had vocal and wrote songs influened by what we love and listen to. We both like grunge and Brit pop. We like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Muse... Our early songs also reflect that. Within two years, we had changed several vocals. Finally we decided to sing all old songs by myself. At the same time, we were crushed on post-rock. Our songs are eventually much more similar to post-rock. Thought we think you could find some grunge, Brit pop and even Classical elements in our songs.
4-Rock seems to be a genercical word for all modern musics. Finally what is Rock ?
We all love music, Rock is one of the apperence of it. We choose rock music just like I used to chose Classical music. However, the most important is we love it. For someone say attitude, I think it exist in old rock scene much more. It’s more proper to call Indie in nowadays I think.
5-In chinese musical world what role plays taiwan rock ?
In pop music industry, it’s barely a musical elemeant. Somtimes in main strem culture, it seems to be a culture symbol like costume, behavior, even youth subculture. Of course it’s a subculture for us starting being in rock when we were teenager. For now the scene we’re in, I would like to call it indie or so-called underground. Besides the music, it could be a life style. Artists, audience, promoters, and such sence consist its own community and ideology. That’s what I see rock in Taiwan.
6-What are the subjects which inspire your songs and compositions and What is the song's process creation ?
As I mentiond above, grunge and Brit pop inspire us most. Late years, we love post-rock much more. Bands like mogwai, mono, sigur ros, explosion in the sky, envy, te’, world’s end girlfriend and sugar plum ferry inspire us most. However, I think you can also find some blues, classical, pop and electronic element in our music. We usually create songs in tow main methods. One is I wrote a riff or had the rough structure for a song, and then we complete it in studio. Another is we just jam in the studio. Each method create different kind of songs and has its own feeling.
7-It's in may of this year that main audience could know you with the release of "Here we are". What was your work to come to this album and how was it welcomed in Taïwan ?
Pardon me for correcting the name of the album. It’s actully "hereweare". We name it in this way by propose. We record and mix our album by Zen Chien at 112F studio in Taiwan. It’s a wonderful indie studio, so are Zen. It’s a pleasure but challange doing this album. We choose multitrack recording in this album. While recording the working demo, we record the drum session at the same time. Second is bass, and then we have two to three guitars. Vocal is final. While recording, we discuss the mix concept and decide how to record with Zen at the same time. After he work out for mixing, we dicuss and make some revision. Then we had our mastering in Masterdisk collaborating with Jeff Reeves in New York.
We want to thanks to Kochipan's appreciate for inviting us doing this interview. The Capelin formed in 2005. After changing members and stlye, we had released debut EP "untitled" in 2009 in dependently. Until this May, we realsed our first album. We did an release tour and an unplugged tour in Taiwan. We actually got more concern and audience than before. We’re happy and grateful to that. We’ll keep working and doing better in the future.
8-How came this choice of composing song with only musical parts ?
As I mentioned before, after changing several vocal and at the same time crushed on post-rock, we dicided trying doing some music without vocal. However, we still have some voice in our recent songs. It’s more proper to say we transform vocal as one of the instrument. We still have vocal, monologue, and scream in some songs. After all, it’s just the way we’re doing our music now. We’ll not supposed to reject having vocal in our music in the future.
9-Through your musical pieces which one is the most of representative of The Capelin ?
For everyone’s consciousness, they may choose different song as their favorite. After all, it may be Breakthrough and Sugar coated Camel (裹著糖衣的駱駝) in "untitled", and Otherside(彼岸), Tigers(很多老虎)—including Jin Gong(驚弓) in the same track—in "hereweare". Maybe after listening up all of our songs, you can discover your own favorite.
10-What could we wish you for the next step of your career and do you have a message for the French audience ?
We’re taking a short rest and writing new songs now. New songs are a little bit different than before. In music itself, we would like to add some new elements like another guitar, female vocal, string, and electronic. Besides, we’re looking forward to cross-border cooperation, for like morden art, theatre, movie score, even fasion or any possibility.
