Over a century ago, the Canadian Presbyterian missionary George Leslie Mackay — known to the locals as the "Black-Bearded Barbarian" — set foot on Formosa, pulling over 21,000 rotten teeth from the people with his bare hands, paving the way for the gospel with his own flesh and blood.
