The Musical Album:“Chanting the Hohcubu of Tsou” & “Praising the Lily of Rukai”
In 2016, TECO Technology Foundation released the musical album-“Chanting
the Hohcubu of Tsou” and “Praising the Lily of Rukai”, which is the result of long-term
endeavor for sustainable education emphasized on aboriginal ballads and dancing.
Mr. Lee Che-Yi, the winner of Golden Melody Award, led the music production team
which built the digital libraries of ancient ballads for years. They set a precedent for
aboriginal ballads accompanied with the strings. In this album, it comprises of 3 CDs
demonstrating different musical arrangement: “Acapella version”, “Chanting with the
companion of the strings” and “String music only”.
Tsou and Rukai were chosen as the first two tribes whose ballads being
arranged and produced by TECO Technology Foundation. Tsou mostly lives at Alishan
and Jade Mountain regions in Taiwan. Its population is the second least of Taiwan
indigenous group. Traditional songs of Tsou are mostly calm, solemn which are like
characteristics of Tsou people and mainly from the conventional rituals. Compared
with social status being the central belief of Tsou, Rukai follows hereditary
aristocratic social structure. Lily is the symbol of the pure of women and the rich
hunting of men. Dancing of Rukai tribes is always combined with singing only by
dancers. Different tones were sung to match their dancing steps. Normally women
dance in a slow and elegant manner while steps and songs of men are more varied.
Indigenous people in Taiwan constitute only approximately 2.3% of the island's
population. Ballads in the albums really incarnate the ample creativity of Taiwanese
indigenous groups. All revenue will be proper used in the indigenous sustainable
education program aiming at preserving the treasured culture assets. Even without
the existence of written characters, their precious culture can last forever through
this particular form of linguistics.
