This collection of Atayal children’s songs was produced as a collaborative effort between singer Inka Mbing and a group of Atayal children from villages across Taiwan, who range from kindergarten to high school age. For this album, they recorded both traditional tunes, rearranging them to create more modern and accessible renditions, and original songs sung in their mother tongue. Inka Mbing embarked on this project to confront a reality faced by all indigenous groups in Taiwan, in which their traditions, culture and language are slowly disappearing as they assimilate into Taiwan’s mainstream Han Chinese culture.
As a songwriter and a teacher of the Atayal language, Inka Mbing worked with young singers from rural villages across Taiwan, compiling their ideas and perspectives to create new music for young people. The songs cover topics of concern to these schoolchildren, which include nature, maintaining Atayal traditions, and environmental and development issues in their home villages. Inka hopes these new songs will inspire young Atayal to learn to speak their mother language and to appreciate the wisdom and culture of their ancestors. Offering a fresh perspective from Atayal children living in today’s world, Inka and her young friends proudly present this new path for traditional Atayal music and their people.
